The Airdrie Xtreme will be well represented during this year’s Alberta Cup tournament, set to be held in Strathmore from April 24 to 27.
A total of 11 players from the team will be competing in the event, with eight playing for the South Zone team and three others on the Central Zone team.
“I think it’s something that the guys should all be very proud of,” Airdrie Xtreme Head Coach Josh Zimmer said.
“It’s a major event to take part in every year, and not only does it allow the guys to showcase their talents, but it also gives them a great way to finish off the year,” he added.
The South Zone team features Airdrie natives Gary Haden, Tyler Petrie, Jonathan Lake, and Cody Gibson as forward, along with goaltender Ben Laidlaw of Cochrane, defencemen Landon Melzer of Canmore and Zachary Bokenfohr of Calgary, and forward Zachary Cox of Rocky View County.
Representing the Xtreme on the Central Zone team are defenceman Taylor Fawns of Didsbury, and forwards Brett Trentham of Three Hills and Mitchell Visser of Didsbury.
“All of the guys had hard tryout sessions with one another, and to have that many make it from our team is pretty amazing,” Zimmer said. “I think that says a lot for our program, especially as we go forward.”
“The way the bracket works, they don’t end up playing each other in the round-robin,” he added. “But if they meet up in the playoffs, it could be interesting.”
The tournament, which features 1999 birth year players from around the province, is designed to showcase talent who may play for Team Alberta in October at the Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup tournament.
A total of eight teams are taking part in the event.
