With the threat of snow decreasing by the day, the organizations of the McKee Homes Tour de Airdrie Fun Run are hoping to see an increase in numbers for this year’s run, which will take place on May 4.
“Right now we are at 160 runners who have registered as of April 21, which is a little bit lower than what we are usually at,” registrar Cindy Mayer said. “We are thinking though that now that the weather is starting to improve, more people will be interested in taking part.”
“We allow the runners to sign up right until the start of the race at 10 a.m. on May 4, so they have lots of time to make up their mind,” she added. “But the sooner that they sign up, the easier it is for us to get everyone set up on race day.”
Previously known as the Tour de Airdrie, this year’s run is now sponsored by McKee Homes, and Fun Run has been added to the event title.
“We wanted to include the words Fun Run to let people know that this is not a competitive race,” event chair Cam Christianson said.
“Anyone can come out to have a fun day, and we want families to be involved to show their support to local charities.”
“McKee Homes has always been a big supporter of the Rotary Club’s events, and we are proud to have them onboard with us,” he added.
The proceeds from the run, which feature 5.6-kilometre, 10-kilometre and 21-kilometre routes, will go towards supporting Community Links and Airdrie Victims Assistance.
“Since 2012, the race has also taken on a more personal feel when Airdrie resident Andrea Conroy was taken from us at the age of 33 from an act of domestic violence,” Christianson said.
“Her loss is a reminder of the work that we do and the work that we need to continue to do to end domestic violence.”
“Our 5.6-km race now called Andrea’s race in honour of her memory,” he added.
Last year’s event raised a total of $20,000 for Airdrie Victims Assistance.
To register for this year’s race, which costs $75 and is free for those 12 years of age and younger, visit the event’s official website at www.tourdeairdrie.com.
