The fourth edition Ride of the Mustangs is in the record books, and it will go down as the most successful yet.
This year’s fundraiser at George McDougall High School, which raises money for the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation to help with childhood cancer initiatives, raised a total of $144,587, as was announced following the event’s conclusion on April 17.
While the initial total was smaller than the original goal of $150,000, George McDougall Principal Ed Pohill expects that total to be reached once the final fundraising totals are brought in.
“The total tends to climb with later donations, as we raised a total of $132,000 last year when the ride finished up but our final total ended up being over $140,000,” Pohill said. “We leave our online donation forms up until June, so we still get donations from there.”
“I guarantee though that we will be over our $150,000 goal once everything is done,” he added. “It’s a proud day though for us here at the school and for everyone in the community for what we have been able to do.”
Since the ride-a-thon began in 2011, a total of more than $420,000 has been raised for the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, with all of the funds being used to help in the fight against cancer.
“The amount of funds that have been raised here is something that we don’t see that often in our community, and it’s amazing to see these kids working hard to raise that much money,” Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation Associate Jenn McLean said.
“The money that everyone has raised so far goes a long way towards the research that we do, and we can’t wait to see what everyone here is going to do next,” she added.
For Grade 12 student Donivan Ryan, who was the chair of the executive committee for this year’s event, the sight of students around the school banding together was something he was proud of.
“It’s really overwhelming to see our school band together for one cause,” Ryan said. “It’s such an awesome event and to see us raise that much money has been amazing.”
“I’ve been involved with the Ride of the Mustangs for the last three years here, and it’s something I want tell anyone who was coming here to take part in,” he added.
