Airdrie artist Veronica Funk has had her paintings displayed all over Canada and has now started to garner recognition for her work as a writer.
The multi-talented Funk recently had an eight-page spread from her blog, printed in Artful Blogging’s Summer 2014 Magazine, a publication that is distributed across North America and beyond.
Appearing in magazines is nothing new for the artist. Funk has had her paintings featured, as well as artist profiles in a host of publications over the years, as well as some smaller feature pieces she has written herself.
The path to being published in a magazine that is distributed around the world did not come out of the blue for Funk, who has been blogging for three years and is constantly pushing to evolve her craft.
“When I first started out blogging my writing was a lot more stilted, but as I’ve gone along, I’ve become more comfortable with just writing in my own voice,” said Funk.
Two years ago, she enrolled in writing courses at the University of Calgary as well as the Alexandra Writers’ Centre in Calgary and now blogs five days a week.
Through her work ethic and network of fellow artists and bloggers, she caught the attention of the California-based publishers of Artful Blogging Magazine editors, who asked her to write a feature article about blogging as an artist.
“The beauty of this is that I’ve kind of found my niche of writing about art, it’s familiar to me,” said Funk.
“I think that’s a piece of advice I’d offer people who are looking to start a blog is to write what you know. I love to read and I read a lot of blogs so for mine I kind of took little bits and pieces that I liked from other blogs and put my own touch on it.”
Funk draws many comparisons between the visual arts and language arts and says that, like with painting. a big part of blogging is to trust yourself and to always pick up everything you can along the way.
“I’m always out taking pictures and I carry a journal with me to jot down ideas when I’m out and about,” said Funk. “Most of the time, I actually have too many ideas, writing is one of those things where the more you’re working, the more ideas you’ll have.”
Between her duties as art coordinator for the Airdrie Public Library, painting, writing and being a mom of two, Funk is still determined to take on more and would eventually like to publish her own book.
“I’d like to create a small book one day,” said Funk.
“Something like a how-to book that could be an inspiration for other artists.”
