Airdrie should have a blue bin program

Re: “Blue bin program would be good addition to Airdrie,” May 1
A few weeks ago, a woman wrote in an article suggesting Airdrie should have a blue bin program. I am 100 per cent in agreement with her.
We moved here five years ago from a small town in B.C. of about 3,000, people, which has had a blue bin program in place since the mid 1990s. I was astonished upon moving here and discovering that there was only a central drop off point and a private collection company.
Let’s face it. The drop off on the west side by Home Depot is a disaster. Garbage everywhere, items dropped that shouldn’t be etc. I would far sooner see the City of Airdrie reduce the two-bag maximum of garbage allowed weekly to one.
With the money saved by doing that, roll out a blue bin program with little cost of increase to residents. We recycle everything we can, use the green bin, and fill one 15-litre kitchen catcher a week. It amazes me how many houses have two full black bags out every week in the area we live.
The companies involved in the current recycling efforts could possibly be contracted to provide the service with proper bins and equipment. For those who don’t want a blue bin program, why should the rest of us who recycle faithfully, continue to pay for your laziness and pay for disposal of garbage we don’t produce? I would rather my portion of waste management be put to something we use and that would be a blue bin. This could be done democratically with the question on the ballot for the next civic election.
