The 11th Annual City Wide Garage Sale is being held the weekend of May 23 to 25.
This event has residents throughout the city of Airdrie coordinating garage sales on a single weekend. It is marketed not only in Airdrie, but in surrounding communities and Calgary as well.
“People come from miles around to take advantage of great deals on good used items,” said Al Jones, founder and organizer.
“Residents in Airdrie are encouraged to team up with neighbours to host multi-family garage sales as well. It’s a great way to clear out no longer wanted items while keeping good usable items out of landfills.”
There is no cost to have a garage sale on the weekend and Jones encourages everyone to invite friends and family to Airdrie via email, Facebook and Twitter to take advantage of this bargain hunter’s paradise.
“It’s a great way to meet your neighbours. After being locked up all winter people have only had an opportunity to wave at neighbours from a distance. This also allows you to get rid of unwanted items while keeping them out of a landfill and you can get gently used items at a bargain price.”
This is the 11th year of the event and according to Jones, there were more than 300 garage sales in the city last year.
“It draws a lot of traffic to the area,” said Jones.
“Invite family and friends out to Airdrie and that adds to more things being purchased and repurposed.”
In conjunction with the City Wide Garage Sale, it is also the City Wide ‘Take it or Leave it’ event. If you have items you no longer want and want to just give it away to someone who can use it, you need only place it on your front lawn from May 23 to 25 with a sign that reads ‘Free to Take.’
People walking or driving by can then see it. If they have use for it, they can take it. If they can’t use it, they leave it for someone who can.
Both the City Wide Garage Sale and the City Wide Take it or Leave it are wholly organized by volunteers. No money is charged or made by the volunteer organizers, said Jones.
Residents are reminded that the City of Airdrie will not pick-up or clean-up garage sale signage or unclaimed/unwanted items.
“For the safety of our parks crew, make note of where you place signs and then please remove those signs after,” said Jones.
