Converting RCMP building great idea

We think City councilís decision to turn the former RCMP building on Edmonton Trail into a multi-use affordable housing building is another great step in creating places to live for Airdrieís less fortunate. (See story on page 1).

Airdrie Housing Limited has worked hard for years to help those in need in Airdrie get a leg up and put a permanent roof over their heads and those of their families.

With the prices of homes and rents skyrocketing in Calgary and area, it is imperative those who are struggling have a resource they can use to find shelter when it is impossible to make ends meet.

The people using this service (and others like the Airdrie Food Bank) cannot be put into a category. They are just like you and me. The only difference is something (whether it be big like an abused woman escaping the clutches of her abuser or small like one missed paycheque because of a cold) has come up and they canít quite pay all the bills.

It could happen to any of us.

Repurposing an existing building in a prime location just makes sense when looking for affordable housing options, which are few and far between in this and other communities.

Making the building multi-use with commercial businesses, office space and apartments is even smarter.

We think this has been well planned and we canít wait to see it come to fruition to help more than a dozen local families.
