The Airdrie leg of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life will be taking place on June 21 at the Genesis Place Recreation Centre. The Canadian Cancer Society is the largest charitable fund for cancer research in Canada and Relay for Life is one of their largest fundraisers; in 2013 the event raised $46.5 million.
Last year Airdrie’s relay raised over $50,000 and Event Chair Bonnie Buckle is hoping to hit $55,000 this year, but knows that it won’t be easy.
“This has been one of the hardest years to get participation,” said Buckle. “There’s just so much going on around Airdrie that a lot of people have already committed to other things, but we’re putting on a push to get more teams registered.”
The 2013 Relay for Life in Airdrie saw 15 teams take part, and there are currently 10 teams registered for the 2014 relay. Teams of as few as one person and up to a maximum of 10 people can register, for a fee of $15 per participant.
There is no set minimum for amount of pledges that participants are expected to raise and Buckle says any contribution is appreciated.
Everything gets underway behind Genesis Place at 5 p.m. where participants will fuel up for the 12-hour race with a dinner, before opening ceremonies kick off at 7 p.m.
The relay starts with a survivors lap, where cancer survivors are honoured and celebrated by those in attendance.
Anyone is welcome to come out to Genesis Place during the evening, participating or not.
“It’s open to the whole family, we’re encouraging people to bring their kids with them,” said Buckle. “We’ll have a kids tent set up with crafts and games going on throughout the night and we’ll be showing movies as well. You don’t have to actually be taking part in the relay to come out, we welcome family and friends of those participating to come out and show support.”
At 10 p.m., there will be a lighting of the luminaries – candles in bags with messages honouring those who lost their battle with cancer, or words of encouragement to those currently affected by cancer.
Registration is open for the event, contact Bonnie Buckle at 403-804-0566 or visit www.convio.cancer.ca
