Summer is fast approaching, and Airdrie Public Library (APL) is gearing up for a great season of programs for the community’s young readers.

For children aged five to 12, our ever-popular TD Summer Reading Club begins July 2, winding up with the grand finale Aug. 15. The program has several options, including full participation, drop-in and reading only. Along with reading the summer away, club members will enjoy various activities and games along the lines of this year’s theme, Eureka! The program is free, but an APL membership is required. For more information, visit our website (airdriepubliclibrary.ca) and the TD Summer Reading Club website at tdsummerreadingclub.ca

Another fun part of summer is our regular Friday drop-in program, and this year we’ll be offering Makerspace Fridays for all. “Makerspace” is a shared place where people come together to create and collaborate, to share knowledge and resources, to “make something.” Each Friday has a different theme, from the great outdoors to medieval times, from other worlds to music. Visit our website to check out the calendar and plan to drop by and have fun.

For preschoolers, everyone’s favourite Rhymes and Songs will be running through the summer, with two sessions each morning from Monday to Thursday, July 2 to Aug. 14. This fun-filled program of fingerplays, rhymes and songs is aimed at children from birth to five years old and their caregivers. New this year, one session on Wednesdays will be infused with Spanish and French.

To kick off the summer for everyone, we will again be holding our annual Canada Day barbecue after the parade, thanks to the generosity of The Butcher Shoppe. On the menu are The Butcher Shoppe’s delicious pulled pork and hot dogs, along with great side dishes and bottled water. Advance tickets will be available up to the start of the event. Money raised goes to support APL’s programs and services.

For more information on our programs and services, visit us online, call 403-948-0600 or drop by.

Correction from last week: The prices for the upcoming June 14 to 15 book sale are as follows: paperbacks – five for $2; hardcovers – six for $5; combination plus APL book bag – 13 for $10.
