Re: “Mayor supportive of rail system between Calgary and Airdrie,” June 5
Mayor Peter Brown has got it right. An extension of the LRT line from north Calgary to Airdrie is an excellent idea.
With Airdrie’s population set to undergo unprecedented growth (some predictions show an increase of 100,000 plus by 2058) an LRT line to Calgary would be viable (Green Trip funding would be available).
The passenger traffic would include Airdrie citizens working in Calgary as well as students wishing to attend post secondary institutions (colleges, universities). An LRT extension to Airdrie from Calgary would reduce the pressure on Highway 2 south from Airdrie to Calgary and speed up the movement of commercial and through traffic and save on maintenance and new construction costs. Mayor Brown has given us his vision of the future of transportation in southern Alberta (it is a vision that for the most part, I support). It’s time to hear from the stakeholders (the people of Airdrie and district). Do you support an LRT link between Airdrie and Calgary?
In closing, I support an LRT link between Calgary and Airdrie. I do not support a Rapid Rail Link between Edmonton and Calgary (it is a waste of tax dollars).
The discussion about our future transportation needs has to start now.
