Two teams from the Airdrie Minor Basketball Association (AMBA) are now provincial champions after winning gold medals at the Alberta 3-on-3 championships in Edmonton on June 9.
In the Boys’ U13 division, ‘The Dream Team’ was the top squad, as it had a 5-0 record on its way to a provincial title.
“Going into the weekend, we knew as a team that it was going to be different than any games that we play in Airdrie, as we were going to be playing against kids we didn’t know,” Dream Team Head Coach Troy Rabel said. “Plus, some of the kids we were up against were bigger and stronger than many of the teams we have played before.”
“As soon as the tournament started, the kids were very strong,” he added. “We had a number of tight games all weekend, but the boys came out hard and dug deep to get a provincial medal.”
Also picking up a gold medal was the U11 boys “Young Guns” team, which also rattled off a perfect 5-0 record to win the title.
“The boys were great all weekend, and the amount of support that we got was amazing to see,” Coach Mike Neilsen said. “It was a memorable experience for everyone involved, and it’s something I won’t forget for a long time to come.”
Two other AMBA teams brought home silver medals from the tournament, as the AMBA Girls U15 squad and the U13 Boys Wolverines team each had runner-up showings.
“Overall, I think the weekend was a huge success for everyone that’s involved with minor basketball here in Airdrie,” Rabel said.
“Everyone did well all weekend no matter where we finished, but everyone put in a strong showing in all of their games,” he added.
“I think that says a lot for the development of basketball in our community.”
