The 2014 Rocky View Sports Association (RVSA) football season doesn’t officially get underway until the start of September, but the Bert Church Chargers have already made their first moves for the upcoming season.
The Chargers, who won the RVSA bronze medal game in November 2013, wrapped up a spring camp at the school on June 9 with a scrimmage against the Bow Valley Bobcats of Cochrane, which officially wrapped up a week of workouts in preparation for the new season.
“Over the previous six days, we had our new rookies and our returning veterans come out and get a taste of what we do, and a head start for what we have planned,” Chargers Head Coach Andy Kirk said.
“It’s great for us to have a scrimmage against Bow Valley, as the guys get to battle and hit other guys who aren’t their fellow teammates,” he added. “It is also a good chance for us as a coaching staff to run some plays on offence and defence, and to see what players fit in best.”
A spring camp like the one the Chargers held isn’t unusual in the RVSA, as all six of the teams in the league hold some sort of pre-season workout.
“When we come back in the fall, it’s just not enough time to get everything in place before we have to play our first game,” Kirk said. “At a spring camp like this, we just work on the basics of the sport and what we do as a team.”
“It’s amazing how much the guys forget in the summer sometimes, but we try to pick up right where we left off,” he joked.
Kirk said he was pleased to see the amount of players that came out to the spring camp, with a total of 62 students signing up to take part.
“It’s the best numbers that we’ve had in about three or four years,” Kirk said. “Everybody is pushing each other out on the field, and that’s brought the intensity level up a lot.”
“I think we are going to see a lot more exciting battles for starting spots when the season comes around,” he added. “In the past, some guys may have felt like they already had a starting job locked up because of our lower numbers, but that won’t be the case this year.”
The 2014 RVSA football regular season schedule is expected to be released later this summer.
