Airdrie Public Library introduces The Den for teens

While Airdrie Public Library (APL) has a limited amount of floor space, we continue to use our square footage to its best advantage.
APL recently opened a new space in the library just for teens, The Den. The space – formerly our computer room – has been transformed into an inviting and safe area for our welcome visitors aged 13 to 19. In the room are computers, our young adult collection and seating, so teens can meet, share, browse, surf, read – individually or as a group. While adults are welcome to browse the collection in The Den, the computers and seating in this space are exclusively for teens.
The Den would not have been possible without support from two local services groups, the Airdrie Lions Club and the Airdrie Lioness Club. Recognizing the value of a separate space in the library especially for teens, these two groups helped fund the project and APL. The community is very grateful for their support. (See related story on page 15).
Also new to the library – and helping us better use those precious square feet – mobile shelving units have been installed in our centre area. The shelves not only provide storage for our collection, but can be moved to create more room when we host special events. This project is thanks to funding from the Rotary Club of Airdrie, and APL is much appreciative of the support.
Don’t forget that individuals in the community can support us, too. On July 1, we will be holding our 11th annual Canada Day Barbecue, a fundraising opportunity made possible through the generosity of The Butcher Shoppe. The barbecue begins right after the parade. On the menu are The Butcher Shoppe’s fabulous pulled pork or hot dogs, plus coleslaw, baked beans, cookies and bottled water. Tickets can be purchased in advance (at both APL and The Butcher Shoppe), which will allow ticket holders to jump the queue. Bring your ticket to the express line between 11 a.m. and noon to be served immediately.
And while you’re enjoying a delicious meal, check out the APL Advocate’s Out of Print Clothing fundraiser, which kicks off on Canada Day.
