What’s better than a chance to win some cold, hard cash?

A chance to win some money while helping out your community.

That’s what the Fuzzy Pickles Society of Alberta is hoping to do with its new Cash Calendar fundraiser in support of a new building for the preschool.

“The Cash Calendar is in September, on six days throughout the month we’re going to have a draw and you can win cash prizes,” said Christie Cameron, chair of the Fuzzy Pickles Society of Alberta.

She said prizes range from $200 to $400 with a grand prize of $1,000 and tickets cost just $20 each.

“You can win one of the smaller prizes and then your name goes back into the draw for the grand prize,” Cameron said.

The preschool, which the society describe as Airdrie’s only not-for-profit preschool, is located at 1003 Allen Street and Cameron is hoping to purchase a new mobile unit and have it up and running on the site by September 2015.

“We were delayed because we haven’t heard back from the Provincial grant application we did,” Cameron said.

“We are hoping to get $125,000 in grant funding.”

The school will replace the 27-year-old one classes are currently held in with a new $235,000 one that will be a better utilization of space.

The school has a capacity of 100 students and had 93 in June.

The current building does not have much in the way of storage space and staff must rely on a shed that is not attached to the building or heated, making a trip for toys and supplies an icy experience in the winter.

The new building will be a 40-foot-by-60-foot mobile classroom and will feature a teacher’s office for parent meetings, a designated indoor storage area, a janitorial supply closet and handicap accessible toilets.

The school has raised $136,000 to-date for the new building and has been fundraising for the last two years.

“The odds of winning (the Cash Calendar draws) are very good in your favour,” Cameron said. “It’s a one in 500 chance to win and you’re helping a very important community group.”

She said the great thing about Fuzzy Pickles is that parents know every dollar they pay in fees goes right to their child’s education

“Absolutely the programming is the same level, if not better, than a for-profit preschool,” Cameron said.

“But I like that every dollar I pay for fees goes right back into the running of the school.”

“I like that it is a parent-run board and I have a say in how the school is run,” she said.

The Cash Calendar tickets are available until Aug. 31, and can be purchased by calling the school at 403-948-5277 and leaving a message, or by emailing
