Airdronians summer is now more musical with SLAM (Supporting Local Area Musicians) in Airdrie bringing back Lunch in the Lawn for another season.

The free concert series, which began on July 9 with a performance from Adam Scotten, is held in front of City Hall and offers residents a different musical performance every other Wednesday until Aug. 20.

Caleb Cummings, vice president of SLAM in Airdrie said, the free event is a great chance for people to get outside and enjoy the sun while listening to some great local artists.

“It’s a change of routine for people working in Airdrie around the area,” he said, adding the location of the event was purposely chosen because it is central and easily accessible.

The next performance in the concert series will be Wakeup Starlight on July 23, a local folk rock band, which has recently received play on local radio stations.

“It’s not going to be the whole band it’s going to be two guys from the band doing a smaller production,” Cummings said.

Following Wakeup Starlight, Celest Schrader will perform on Aug. 6 and the Airdrie Community Chior will close out the series on Aug. 20.

Cummings said though the performers get paid the event offers them exposure to new audiences and a chance to try something new as well.

“It’s a different sort of scene,” he said. “A lot of musicians are used to playing in bars and rarely does the opportunity come up to be playing in the sunshine in the middle of the day.”

This is the third year SLAM in Airdrie has presented Lunch on the Lawn.

Cummings said with the lineup for this concert series set, SLAM is now looking forward to Airdrie Fest and ARTember in September.

“There will be some new artists and new groups,” he said of the performers at the two events.

SLAM is always looking for new musicians and suggests interested performers sign up online at slaminairdrie.wix.com

“Come and be a part of it,” he said.
