With back to school season right around the corner, staff at Access Chiropractic and Wellness want to make sure children get a healthy start by offering free backpack checks starting this week.
“It’s all about prevention,” said Dr. Jacqueline Boyd, owner and operator of Access Chiropractic & Wellness. “If someone had told me when I was five or six years old, ‘hey if you wear your backpack properly today and you don’t over weigh it, you will be able to prevent problems from occurring down the road,’ perhaps I would have listened a little more closely.”
Backpack checks are open to the public from Aug. 18 to Sept. 19 at Access’ two locations in Airdrie at #120, 52 Gateway Drive NE and #110, 2700 Main Street SE.
Boyd said it only takes about two minutes to complete the check. Chiropractic staff will run through a short checklist of what’s good, what’s bad or may need improvement, and a few things to consider in the future when purchasing a backpack.
“Your spine is developing as a kid,” said Boyd. “(Children’s) spines are growing and developing it’s really important that they develop properly, so they can avoid having back problems or back issues as they grow older.”
The issue is very important for Boyd, who is the parent of two small children. She noted that a few adjustments to the size and fit can prevent many back issues in the long term. Learning how to distribute the weight of books and materials within the bag can help to avoid recurrent back injuries over time.
“The size of the pack is very important,” said Boyd. “It shouldn’t go above the shoulders and it shouldn’t go below the waist.”
She added good bags have two straps, which should be an inch wide and padded. Preferably, backpacks should have adjustable shoulder and waist straps, and the backboard should be padded as well, she added.
The wellness centre has been offering backpack checks since they opened 10 years ago. Access Chiropractic and Wellness is a natural health clinic that attempts to treat the underlying issue concerning patient health first. Various services offered at the wellness centre include – chiropractic, cold laser, acupuncture, custom foot orthotics, registered massage therapy, naturopathic medicine and Graston technique, an instrument-assisted technique used to detect and treat scar tissue.
