A beard for a good cause

Fred Burley admits it’s a more unusual way to raise money for a good cause. The city councillor and supporter of a number of Airdrie non-profits has been growing his signature beard beyond its usual tidy state and is now offering one lucky individual a chance to take a pair of scissors to the mess on his chin.
“From Feb. 1 to 28, $25 gets you a ticket, which gets you the entry,” he said. “I’m going to have a pair of golden scissors and whoever wins gets to hold onto the chunk of beard and go snip.”
“Our goal is to raise $5,000 to assist the Airdrie and District Victims Assistance Society (ADVAS). All of our not-for-profits need help. There’s no doubt about that. But this is one group that doesn’t get the same kind of publicity as some of the others. I wanted to help a little bit. I know they need money.”
Burley regularly volunteers with the Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie, North Rocky View Community Links and the Airdrie Food Bank. Helping out ADVAS through this beard snip is adding to his resume of giving back in his community.
“ADVAS doesn’t really have any events you can volunteer at in the same way,” he said. “This is one way I can try to help them. Hopefully we raise the $5,000.”
Angela Wright, executive director of ADVAS, said the unique event is “greatly appreciated.”
“Funding has been hard to come by, given the economy, so any type of community support that comes our way, we really do appreciate that,” she said.
Exactly when Burley will go back to his slightly less hirsute self is still to be determined. And he’s quick to point out it’s only his beard that’s on the line.
“The moustache has to stay – it’s a bit more important. My lovely wife does not like me without a moustache. She says it’s like kissing a stranger,” he said.
Burley’s wife, Sharon, also doesn’t like his new look. Burley said it’s likely she’ll be entering the draw to win a chance at the golden scissors – more than once.
Burley has set up an Eventbrite page to collect donations and sell tickets to the beard snipping event. Each donation of $25 gives the purchaser one chance at being the lucky person to wield the scissors. The page can be accessed by going to eventbrite.ca and searching for Fred Burley’s Beard.
