Airdrie country musician Dani-Lynn Trentham, 21, is embarking on a radio tour to showcase her new single “Do It Like That.”
The single was released Jan. 13 and hit radio waves for the first time at Real Country 95.5 in Red Deer, she said, making it the fourth song of her career to do so.
“This one was really long overdue, honestly,” Trentham said. “I’m probably the most proud of this song that I’ve been of any of the singles that have gone out.”
Though she has written many songs herself, she said “Do It Like That” started as a catalogue tune she chose to work with.
Bringing an edgy rock sound to her country style, Trentham said the lyrics and melody of “Do It Like That” really embraced the direction she has taken her music in the past year.
Playing the song live at the Alberta Country Music Awards Jan. 21 and 22 was a big deal for her when people approached afterwards to ask when she wrote it, she said.
“That’s a huge compliment to me,” Trentham said. “Even though I didn’t write this, it means that I’m able to portray it enough that it’s believable.”
Fellow Airdrie country musician Dustyn Fink, 24, has been in a relationship with Trentham since she first heard the catalogued demo.
Listening to “Do It Like That” throughout different stages of its development, he said he was impressed when he heard the end result.
“She’s made it her own,” he said.
During the last radio tour in 2015 for her single “Wreck my Heart,” Trentham said she managed to perform at about 35 to 40 stations.
Each radio stop is an audition style process, she said, where she talks with the station’s musical director before performing a few songs live with Fink on the guitar.
The hope is that the radio station would add the song to that week’s playlist, but Trentham said even if it doesn’t, the benefit of building connections is a valuable experience as well.
She said she has even had a station once change its mind and decide to play the song a couple weeks later.
“You never know,” Trentham said.
With the ground she gained as a feature artist in Wild 95.3 Project WILD in 2016 as well as the positive feedback the single has received since its release, she said she has hopes many radio stations would pick up “Do it Like That.”
Though the radio tour kicked off in Red Deer, Trentham said the two wouldn’t hit the road again until the start of March with live performances at Wine-Ohs in Calgary Feb. 10 and Tracks Pub in Olds Feb. 11.
With a year-and-a-half worth of experience playing together, the two are able to bring a couple’s intuition to a performance, Fink said.
“We can kind of predict what the other is going to do,” he said. “Our live shows are a lot tighter.”
