Students at Bert Church High School are getting ready to welcome approximately 900 delegates from high schools across the province to the 2018 Alberta Student Leadership Conference (ASLC) in May 2018.
According to teacher and conference chair Ryan Jones, students are looking forward to hosting the conference – entitled Agents of Change – from May 27 to 28.
“The students are really excited to get going on this...,” he said.
Jones said there are approximately 50 students from Bert Church, W.H. Croxford High School, George McDougall High School, Beiseker School and W.G. Murdoch School in Crossfield planning the event.
The planning committee came up with the theme for the conference and will host a dance during the event. They’ll also help during the event to make sure it runs smoothly.
“We also have spirit leaders, who are like ambassadors for the school. They take the students around from place to place (during the conference). We have about 126 of them currently,” he said.
According to Jones, the delegates will engage in a number of activities during the conference.
“They work on workshops, they collaborate with each other from different schools to share ideas and ways to build school culture within their groups,” he said. “We bring in four keynote speakers.”
Jones said the line-up of keynote speakers includes Ian Tyson – a comedian and motivational speaker, not the country singer – and Orlando Bowen. Bowen, a former CFL player, runs a charity called One Voice, One Team, which runs leadership programs for youth.
Most events will take place at the school with the keynote addresses taking place at Genesis Place Recreation Centre, which is better suited to accommodate the high number of delegates at one time, according to Jones.
Organizers are still looking for families interested in billeting a student or two from out of town.
“It’s just a matter of getting people to sign up,” Jones said. “We’re doing a campaign through our parent council to try to get students and community members to take some students on.”
Sponsors and volunteers are also still needed for the event.
