Clinic donates $1 for every flu shot given

Whether we want to accept it or not, flu season is coming. We all know we should get the flu shot, but Polaris Travel Clinic is adding a little extra incentive to roll up your sleeve. The clinic will donate $1 from every flu shot given there to the Airdrie Lioness Club’s Christmas Hamper program.
“There’s a lot of places where you can get your flu shot done…but I think it’s nice to know there’s a little bit going back into the community when you get it done with us,” said Jason Kmet, clinic owner and pharmacist.
The shot, which became available Oct. 23 in Alberta, is free for anyone six months of age and older with an Alberta Health Care card. Patients can call ahead or drop in for a vaccine. Polaris will also be doing free flu vaccination clinics in the community until Nov. 15.
“It’s kind of neat to get outside the walls of our office and reach out to the community,” Kmet said.
The clinics will be scattered around the city for the duration of the program in hopes of reaching people who may not have the chance to get to the actual clinic. Community clinics will include the Airdrie Public Library, the Airdrie Food Bank, and Community Links.
Kmet likened the flu shot to a seatbelt, acting as protection against the virus.
“When you get in your car you’re probably not going to get into a car accident that day, but you’ve got the seatbelt on just in case,” he said.
Rhonda Auclair, of the Airdrie Lioness Club, said the money will help fill each Christmas hamper with groceries for a week, a full Christmas dinner and gifts for each person in the family.
“It’s just a really nice way for the city of Airdrie to give back to our community for those that are in need,” Auclair said.
Last year, the Lioness Club provided 372 hampers to families in need thanks to the generosity of Airdrie residents, Auclair said.
“We have been so incredibly fortunate of the generosity from the city of Airdrie residents in the past, (they have) just helped us put all of this together,” she said. “It’s such a giving community.”
