A new name has entered the race for a spot on Airdrie city council. Serge Desrochers has lived in Airdrie for 11 years and said he hopes to bring his previous experience serving on a city council in Quebec to the role if elected.
Desrochers said he felt his experience in municipal politics in Quebec would translate well to Airdrie, but he also has other reasons for running.
“I want to help Airdrie. It’s been 11 years that I’ve been in Airdrie now and I want to give back to the community because Airdrie (has) served me very (well) since (I’ve) been here,” he said. “My kids are getting old(er) and I have more time to give to the city.”
Desrochers is vice-principal at a French immersion school in Calgary. He has been teaching high school math since 1998. Since moving to Airdrie in 2006, he has coached with the Airdrie Minor Hockey Association, served on the board of the Airdrie Mixed Industrial Slow Pitch league as both a director and as president, and volunteered during the 2014 Alberta Summer Games.
According to Desrochers, one of the things he would like to do, if elected, is focus on the good things Airdrie already has and work to make them better.
“The most important priority right now is to solidify what we have already – to make sure that everything is done…before developing a lot of other big things,” he said. “We grew so much that the city has trouble to give the service for the number of people we have. If we need another Genesis Place, for example, let’s do one before thinking about other things. Let’s help people to be active before we think about developing other things like downtown.”
Desrochers said he also believes there should be more RCMP on the streets to help keep residents safe.
Unlike many candidates running in this year’s municipal election, Desrochers said he doesn’t plan to put up a lot of signs around town, choosing to focus his campaign efforts on connecting with residents via social media. He has a Facebook page at facebook.com/pg/Serge4AirdrieCityCouncil and said he will respond to any messages sent to him that way as quickly as possible.
