Okotoks: Recreation Centre hosting events for Family Day

Okotoks area residents are invited to unplug and take part in family-friendly activities at the rec centre next week.
The Town is running its Family Day Unplugged event at the Okotoks Recreation Centre with free activities throughout the day on Feb. 19. From parent-and-tot swim and shinny hockey in the morning to public swimming and skating in the afternoon, and free fitness and open gym time through the day, there’s something for everyone.
“Just get unplugged, get away from electronics, go out and participate, take in the free activities at the rec centre, get out and walk, do something,” said Mark Doherty, Okotoks community events co-ordinator.
“Just don’t stay in and plug in.”
The Town’s Family Day event started five years ago and has transformed over the years, but the basic idea hasn’t changed, he said.
Nowadays the event is about getting people away from televisions, tablets and gaming consoles and getting them to enjoy time together, whether inside or out, Doherty said.
“Even if it’s playing a board game or going cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, tobogganing, whatever the case – just go out and enjoy yourself,” said Doherty.
In addition to swimming and skating, the gym at the recreation centre will be split into two sides – one for smaller children and one for older.
Doherty said Family Day activities make it the busiest day at the Okotoks Recreation Centre every year.
“Lots of people come out to take part in the free activities,” he said. “We notice we even get a lot of families from Calgary that come in to take advantage of it.”
