Football can add some romance

Sometimes, there are bigger things than a football game.
Such as My Reason For Living’s milestone birthday.
I missed the last HTA-Foothills showdown because I was rightfully celebrating my lovely girlfriend’s birthday.
(Can’t tell you how old she is, but she’s like that Dylan classic: “So much older then, younger than that now.”)
You have to be crafty to be a football fan. I learned from the best — my dad had season tickets to Washington State Cougar football for years. He loved the Cougs and family, and I still don’t know which was first.
Mom and dad were married in Tennessee on Oct. 1, 1951 and one year, as an anniversary gift, dad decided to take mom back to the Volunteer State.
Mom was delighted, thrilled overjoyed and too darn studious for her own good.
She did some research looking for romantic junk and discovered that on Oct. 1, 1994 the Cougs were playing the Tennessee Volunteers. Yep, dad had finagled romance with Cougar football.
Love wasn’t exactly filling ma’s heart when she learned she would celebrate her 43rd anniversary with 100,000 Vol fans decked out in hideous orange. She was mad, despite the fact she saw Peyton Manning’s first college start.
I have learned from dad’s mistake. I’m taking MRFL to dinner this Friday, maybe at Crystal Ridge golf course despite the Knights-Falcons rematch.
And as we approach HTA from the north, I will say: ‘Oh, honey is that a football game?’ And it will dawn on her why I chose to wear a Falcon burgundy shirt and Knights black-and-green pants....
