Great start for Airdrie’s recycling program

We are so happy to hear Airdrie residents are utilizing the new curbside recycling program, which kicked off April 3.
Susan Grimm, team leader of waste and recycling services with the City of Airdrie, said more than 17,300 blue carts were delivered and there were delays during the first week of collection because many of the carts were packed full (see story on page 3).
Some people even left extra recycling outside of the carts, which the service provider, GFL Environmental, did pick up, but Grimm said that was a one-time deal. That may have set a bad precedent for the program going forward, but hopefully people abide by the rules and save their excess recycling for the following week.
After all of the controversy over the program, itís great to see such huge participation. Grimm said it was anticipated each truck would be able to collect from approximately 1,100 households before needing to be emptied, but on one day during the first week of the program, recycling was collected from 4,300 households, which would normally equal four trips for each truck, but actually required eight.
Way to go Airdrie! Letís keep it up.
