Canada and the United States can take some advice from the Holy Trinity Academy student council when it comes to market negotiations.
The council members have set up a win-win situation for all the parties involved at the upcoming HTA Annual Christmas Market on Nov. 25.
“It’s to provide an opportunity for local businesses and businesses that students are connected to, to come out and promote their businesses,” said Isaiah Barber, student council president.
The student council is asking for a small table-fee from businesses. The funds raised by the fees will go towards student council initiatives.
“We are really asking people to come in and buy a table and sell their wares,” said Jamie Roeske, council member and Grade 12 student. “We want people to see what the community has to offer and support businesses.
“Or, maybe it’s for somebody who is just starting (a business) and wants to get the word out. We want to bring everybody together for Christmas.”
The cost per table is $30 for staff and students or $40 for community members.
The event not only will help promote the Christmas season, which is approaching like a runaway locomotive, it will also promote school spirit.
Initiatives organized by the student council include dances, movie nights and pep rallies for HTA’s quality sports program.
The results might be as simple as making a student feel comfortable in the friendly confines of Holy Trinity Academy.
“We’ve held stress relief days where we have had hot chocolate, bubble-wrap to pop or maybe provide food or popsicles for the students before exams,” Roeske said. “Just some things to make the students feel at home and comfortable here — especially the new students and Grade 10s.”
The timing couldn’t be better.
“Christmas just has that stereotypical cozy, warm, bringing everybody together, feeling,” Roeske said. “We just want to foster that. We are lucky to live in a town that is as small and lovely as Okotoks with such amazing citizens.
“We want to meet other people and send cheer during the Christmas season.”
