Airdrie RCMP is also investigating an attempt to steal an ATM machine from the Safeway on Main Street Jan. 3.
According to Martin, two suspects smashed the glass of the front door to the business to gain access to the store shortly after 5 a.m. Employees heard the alarm go off and went to investigate. They witnessed two men attempting to attach a tow strap to the ATM. One of the men was in the store while the other remained outside. Employees yelled at the two suspects who fled southbound on Main Street in a white pickup truck.
Witnesses were able to provide RCMP with a description of the suspect who gained access to the store. He is described as being approximately 6’3” with a thin build. He was wearing a band over his face, sunglasses and a white construction hard hat.
Airdrie RCMP has charged Kyle Meckler, 32, of Airdrie with six offenses related to a theft in the East Lake industrial area Jan. 7, according to Martin.
Members responded at approximately 6:15 p.m. to a 911 call from a person at the location who had been alerted to the theft by a surveillance system, which appeared to show Meckler attempting to steal a motorcycle trailer.
Meckler fled on foot when police arrived and attempted to hide, according to RCMP. With the assistance of the RCMP Police Dog Services, he was ultimately located and taken into custody.
Meckler is charged with theft over $5,000, possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, failing to comply with release conditions and two counts of mischief. He had a bail hearing in Calgary Provincial Court Jan. 9, which was held over until Jan. 11.
