The newly elected Board of Trustees for Rocky View Schools (RVS) held its organizational meeting Nov. 2, electing returning Airdrie Trustee Todd Brand to the role of chair.
Brand – who served as vice chair until the recent election – said he was “honoured” to be chosen to lead the board, saying it was another way he could serve.
“It’s a tremendous privilege and honour. I will (do my best) to lead us to become a highly effective board, working together,” he said. “If we do our work well, we are going to enhance student learning across the division.”
Ward 6 trustee Fiona Gilbert who represents the Town of Cochrane was elected to be vice chair.
Trustees also determined the various boards and committees each would sit on for the next year.
Veteran trustee for Ward 4 Norma Lang will serve as the board’s representative on the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) as well as on the Labour Relations Committee and the Appeals Committee.
Lang will be joined on the Labour Relations Committee by new trustees Melyssa Bowen and Shali Baziuk. Bowan and Baziuk will also sit on the Grievance Committee.
All trustees sit on the Budget Development and Review Committee, the Policy Development Committee and the Local Recreation boards.
Gilbert, along with Bowen and new trustee Judi Hunter, will sit on the Student Transportation committee. This committee will have its work cut out for it as it grapples with growing transportation costs.
Two trustees will represent the Board of Trustees on the Alberta School Boards Association as Zone 5 representatives. Stepping up to take on this role were Gilbert and Baziuk who will be joined by Brand on the Advocacy committee.
Former principal and new trustee for the City of Airdrie Jim Forrest will serve on the Student Expulsion Committee along with Ward 2 Trustee Patty Sproule and Baziuk. Forrest will also serve on the Professional Development Leave Committee and the Audit Committee. Sproule will join Lang and Brand on the Appeals Committee.
Hunter will join Forrest on the Professional Development Leave Committee and the Audit Committee, and be the lone respresentative on the Springbank Park for All Seasons Committee and the RVS Adult Learning Advisory Board.
