14th annual Pumpkin Festival comes to town

A fall, family favourite is back in the form of the 14th annual Pumpkin Festival at Blue Grass Ltd. Nursery, Sod and Garden Centre Oct. 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“Not much has been changed for this years, as the event is amazing the way it is,” said Lisa Silva, marketing manager at Blue Grass.

Families can take part in activities such as face painting, hay rides, a Cinderella pumpkin coach, pumpkin carving, pumpkin bowling, a petting zo and a giant straw maze. The event is capped of with the infamous pumpkin smash.

“Every year we have the surprise of seeing what our giant pumpkin grower grew in the way of giant and unusual pumpkins, squash and gourds,” Silva said.

The pumpkin smash will happen three times this year. First a bonus pumpkin drop at 2:30 p.m., followed by a Pumpkin Drop Contest at 2:45 p.m. The grand finale pumpkin smash, held at 3 p.m., will feature a giant pumpkin, weighing more than 800 pounds, falling more than 100 feet to demolish a waiting car below.

“This will be the 14th year for our pumpkin smash and every year it’s still everyone’s favorite event,” Silva said.

All activities at the festival are free, but a donation at entry is encouraged. Money raised will go to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Silva said Blue Grass’s choice to support the hospital stems from its values as a family-owned business and that most employees have children.

“It’s important to us at Blue Grass to give back to our local community and support our future children,” she said.

In the past 13 years, a combined total of $225,000 has been raised thanks to more than 5,500 people who attend each year.

The festival hopes to raise more than $45,000 this year.
