A 41-year-old man from Kindersley, Sask., was arrested for uttering threats and forcible confinement after an incident in the Airdrie area, Dec. 21, 2017, according to Airdrie RCMP Media Liaison Const. Dan Martin.
“Airdrie RCMP received a call from an adult female traveling in a vehicle eastbound from Airdrie. This female reported being scared for her life and not being allowed to leave the vehicle,” he said.
The incident began at approximately 7:45 p.m. Martin said RCMP was able to locate the vehicle east of Airdrie in the Beiseker area and began following it.
“Beiseker, Drumheller and Three Hills detachments also became involved in coming up with a plan to safely stop the vehicle,” he said. “With the use of a spike belt, we were able to successfully deflate the tires and stop the vehicle. At that point the male suspect began to co-operate with police and was arrested without incident.”
Martin said the female victim was not harmed and was escorted to safety. The man and the woman are believed to be known to each other. Martin said the man’s name will not be released, in part to protect the identity of the woman. The Emergency Response Team and RCMP Police Dog Services were also deployed to the call, according to Martin.
The potentially explosive situation was one that Martin said all involved dealt with in a professional manner.
“The call was handled very professionally and safely by Sgt. Henderson who was in charge of the pursuit and the members did a fantastic job in stopping the vehicle safely and not causing any harm to themselves or the public,” he said.
Training for these kinds of situations is something Airdrie RCMP has been actively pursuing, according to detachment commander Insp. Kimberley Pasloske.
“Over the last several months, our members have really been focusing on training and practicing high risk vehicle interventions”, she said. “It is this preparation and the tactical decisions that the members made that led directly to the successful apprehension of this high risk offender and two others this past weekend”.
Charges against the man are pending.
