Break out your best cocktail dress or suit – it’s time to follow the yellow brick road all the way to the Emerald City, courtesy the Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie (BGCA).
The BGCA’s sixth annual fundraising event is scheduled Feb. 24 for the second consecutive year at Apple Creek Golf Course. BGCA manager of events and volunteer co-ordinator Jessica Nash said the new location has helped bring the popular event to a new level.
“I think that this year is going to be the best year that we’ve done yet. The scenery (at Apple Creek) is amazing and they have really great food, so we couldn’t ask for a better spot to hold it,” she said. “It’s great to start the year with a bang, and every little bit helps. We’re definitely feeling the effects of the downturn.”
Attendees will be treated to a roast beef buffet dinner, desserts, dancing and a performance by Calgary-based surf rock band The 427’s. Though the venue will be taking on a Wizard of Oz flavour, Nash said the event is moving away from themed costumes.
“We’re going black tie, so we’re hoping people will come dressed as if they’re going to a gala at Emerald City,” she said. “So there will be little hints of the Wizard of Oz – tons of lighting, the emerald feel of it – without it being hokey.”
Money raised through the gala goes back into BGCA programming, including funding for summer camps, school supplies and various other programming options.
“It’s one of those events that a lot of our community members really look forward to. They get to come out and have an awesome meal,” Nash said. “We haven’t raised our ticket prices because we want to have those people who do support us to be able to come out.
“They get to get fancy and have a beautiful meal and they get to learn a little about what we do and what we’re really proud of at the BGCA. It’s a really awesome event.”
Tickets are $50 and are available through Eventbrite. For more information, visit airdrie.bgccan.com/2018-gala
