The Airdrie Business Awards were handed out Oct. 19 during a gala celebration at the Bert Church Live Theatre.
The awards, organized by the Airdrie Business Resource Partnership, are presented annually in five categories: Emerging Business, Employer Excellence, Environmental Stewardship, Business Leader, Legacy Business and Winning Edge.
This year’s winner of the Emerging Business Award was Airdrie Puppy Pals, which started out as a dog walking business three-and-a-half years ago and has since grown to include a doggy daycare, obedience and agility classes, and puppy socialization.
“It’s like the icing on an amazing cake. We get to do what we love and we have an amazing team and we have amazing clients,” said owner Nikki Nordick. “To be recognized by our community with this award is the icing on an already amazing cake.”
Nordick and her husband Ray Cossette opened the daycare two years ago. She said they were initially shocked to hear their names called as the award winner.
“It was a cool experience. They went through all the names – Ray and I were just happy to be there – and they said, ‘and the winner is Airdrie Puppy Pals’ and we looked at each other and said, ‘oh, wow, that’s us,’” she said. “We weren’t expecting anything. It was just an honour to be nominated and an honour to be a finalist.”
Other winners included Davis Chevrolet GMC Buick Ltd. in the Employer Excellence category, Happy Paws Veterinary Clinic in the Environmental Stewardship category and McKee Homes Ltd. in the Legacy Business Category.
Elaine McKee of McKee Homes Ltd. was named the Business Leader of the year and the Winning Edge Award went to Switchback Creative.
The Airdrie Business Resource Partnerships is made up of representatives from the Airdrie Chamber of Commerce, Airdrie Economic Development, Community Futures Centre West, the Airdrie Women in Business Association and Bow Valley College. The Airdrie Business Awards were first handed out 1998 when the only award was the Winning Edge Award and have since grown to encompass six award categories.
