Charity ball hockey tournament a go

Ten teams will take to the pavement Oct. 1 for the first-ever Sam Zee Ball Hockey Tournament at Davis Chevrolet Airdrie.

The one-day event is a fundraiser for the Airdrie Food Bank. As of press time, $20,000 had already been raised for the organization through the Airdrie Dads Facebook group, businesses and residents of Airdrie and the surrounding area.

“Everybody jumped on board too fast. Within one week I had the 100 players and more than 30 companies donating,” event co-ordinator Sam Zeytoun said. “It snowballed so fast that I am just starting to catch up with it. I can’t name you a company that hasn’t supported this.”

Ten teams, each consisting of 10 players, will compete in the Davis Chevrolet parking lot in a round robin format, all vying to become the first-ever tournament champions.

The event gets underway at 11 a.m. and is expected to run until approximately 4 p.m. Friends, family and supporters are asked to attend and cheer on the teams.

The event will include an opening ceremony with Airdrie Mayor Peter Brown taking part in the opening faceoff.

There will also be activities for kids at the event, organized by the Airdrie Public Library, including colouring stations, games, face painting and a giant bouncy slide. According to Zeytoun, proceeds raised at the kid’s area will go to the library.

Donations of non-perishable food items for the Airdrie Food Bank will also be accepted at the event.

Zeytoun said he plans to make it an annual event and already has a few ideas to make next year’s even better.

“I think I’ll have to start a bit earlier,” Zeytoun said. “I put this together in just 40 days. This has been the toughest thing I have had to do.”
