Children’s choir to perform with Norman Foote

The children’s choir at R.J. Hawkey Elementary School in Airdrie will get the opportunity to dress in Halloween costumes and perform with Norman Foote at Bert Church Live Theatre Oct. 17.

According to Theresa Cochran, theatre manager at the theatre, Foote is a renowned children’s performer and Juno Award winner.

“It’s like a Halloween kind of show with stories and music and the choir,” Cochran said.

“Kids can wear their Halloween costumes and we’re going to have some Halloween cupcakes and some different things for them, so it should be really fun.”

The show, called the Musical Masquerade Halloween Howl, will run from 7 to 9 p.m. Bert Church Live Theatre also hosted a Halloween Howl Costume Design Class from Sept. 20 to Oct. 11 in conjunction with the event, where children aged eight to 12 were able to make their own costumes to wear to the show.

Cochran said Foote has performed with a children’s choir at the theatre before.

He has written and recorded songs for Disney Records and has received multiple awards, including Best Songwriter from The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN), a gold award from National Parenting Product Awards (NAPPA) and Parents’ Choice Awards.

Cochran said she encourages parents to take their children to the show to expose them to live theatre.

“I think it’s really important to expose children to live theatre and to live music because it helps create more creative kids as they grow,” Cochran said.

“It also helps them grow into avid theatre-goers when they get older and have a fine appreciation for fine arts.

“I think it’s something that’s not always – you know, it’s, ‘let’s go to a hockey game or a movie,’ – but to see a live performance is something amazing for kids for sure,” she said.
