Members from the Airdrie RCMP were involved with the arrest of three suspects Sept. 30, in two separate incidents, according to Airdrie RCMP Media Liaison Const. Dan Martin.
At approximately 4:25 p.m., Calgary Police Services (CPS) contacted Airdrie RCMP regarding a vehicle heading towards Airdrie, the driver of which was not responding to requests to stop, according to Martin.
“The (suspect) had stabbed his father in Calgary. HAWCS was in the air and basically telling us where the vehicle was heading. It came into our jurisdiction and attempts to stop the vehicle were negative,” he said.
According to Martin, the driver of the vehicle turned around and headed southbound on Highway 2.
“Airdrie members deployed a spike belt on the highway and were able to take out all four tires. Calgary members were basically in contact with the vehicle right behind (the suspect vehicle) and were able to move it into the ditch and a gentleman was arrested there,” he said.
According to CPS, after stabbing his father the suspect set the home in northwest Calgary on fire and fled before police arrived. The fire was contained to the basement and was quickly extinguished by the Calgary Fire Department.
Upon entering the home, police found one male victim had been stabbed. He was subsequently transported to a Calgary hospital in serious but stable condition.
According to a CPS spokesperson, A 23-year-old man from Calgary has been charged with multiple offenses including attempted murder, break and enter, theft of a motor vehicle, and flight from a police officer.
His name is not being released to protect the privacy of the victim. He was remanded into custody where he remains.
Prior to this incident, at approximately 1:50 p.m., Airdrie RCMP was contacted by the Sylvan Lake detachment regarding a stolen 2015 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck heading to Airdrie.
According to Martin, attempts to stop the vehicle in Airdrie were unsuccessful.
The driver of the vehicle headed southbound on Highway 2 towards Calgary. RCMP was able to work with OnStar, the truck’s onboard vehicle assistance program, to disable the vehicle near Balzac on Highway 2. Two occupants of the vehicle fled on foot. One suspect was apprehended after a short foot chase.
“One took off towards an RV dealership…and attempted to take refuge and hide in an RV,” Martin said. “The male was located by RCMP and several attempts to have him exit the vehicle were unsuccessful. The RCMP Police Dog Services were used to apprehend the individual.”
Charges are pending against both men.
