Airdrie RCMP has charged 49-year-old James Christopher Yanew with robbery after conducting a search warrant at a property on East Lake Boulevard Aug. 30, according to Airdrie RCMP Media Relations Officer Const. Dan Martin.
RCMP was called to Goldworks Sales and Service on Main Street at approximately 10:10 a.m., according to Martin, after staff triggered an alarm.
“A lone male approached the front doors of the store, pulled on the door slightly and then walked away,” he said. “A little while later, he walked into the store wearing a black mask over his face and holding a knife. Staff immediately noticed this and sounded the alarm.”
Yanew fled on foot, according to Martin.
The store provided RCMP with video surveillance footage, which showed Yanew first approaching the store – prior to putting on the black mask. Martin said investigators recognized the suspect from previous dealings with him.
“He is known to police. He has quite an extensive record with regards to that type of criminal behaviour,” he said. “An officer who had dealt with the accused just a few days prior to [this incident]recognized the suspect immediately.”
Yanew is charged with two counts of robbery, one count of wearing a disguise with intent to commit an indictable office and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order. Martin said despite nothing being stolen from the jewelry store, the circumstances of the offense met the criteria for charging Yanew with robbery, rather than attempted robbery.
RCMP was aided by assistance from surrounding businesses to make this arrest, Martin added.
“Speaking to neighbours and businesses, looking for video surveillance and anything like that [helped make this arrest],” he said. “There was an incidence that happened very close to Goldworks at that time that pieced all the pieces of the puzzle together and allowed investigators to positively identify the accused.”
Airdrie RCMP’s General Investigation Section, Crime Reduction Unit and general duty officers conducted a search warrant of a property along East Lake Boulevard Aug. 30 and made the arrest without incident, he added.
Yanew was remanded into custody and will appear in Airdrie Provincial Court Sept. 6.
