Village of Beiseker set to host 'Century of Weddings' fashion show to commemorate 100th birthday

The fashion show will feature both men's and ladies' wedding attire from 1921 to 2021, highlighting the different fashions in every decade.

Here comes the bride, all dressed in white.

The Village of Beiseker is preparing to host its centennial celebration weekend from June 10 to 12, after postponing a community-wide birthday bash last June due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

One of the many ways the milestone is being recognized is the Century of Weddings Fashion Show, which will be held on June 10, starting at 6 p.m. at the Beiseker Community Centre.

Tickets to the show cost $15, which includes a light dinner, and can be purchased on Eventbrite

The show will feature both men's and ladies' wedding attire from 1921 to 2021, highlighting the different fashions in every decade, according to the chair of the wedding committee, Jane Senger-Lang.

The show will last about an hour and a half, Senger-Lang said, with each decade being allotted 10 minutes to highlight the fashions that were popular during that time.

The wedding attire that will be featured on stage has been given to the committee on a loan basis by various members of the community.

“We have advertised and solicited personally for over two years … we have people come forth with their dresses that either they can wear or [we] will find a model to wear them,” Senger-Lang said.

Emceeing the show, Senger-Lang has asked for stories to accompany the attire. The stories can be about the couple and recollections of their wedding day.

“We’ve also asked them for the music that they felt was either their song for their wedding. Some of us remember what that was, and some of us don’t,” Senger-Lang explained.

In some cases, dresses in the show span across three or four generations, she added.

“That’s really quite special, to see a great-granddaughter wearing her grandmother’s dress and having them all through the four generations,” Senger-Land said.

Although Senger-Lang has collected a dress from every decade, finding models to don the garments on the catwalk has proven to be a bit of a challenge.

“A lot of women have given us their gowns and [we] don’t have a model for it,” Senger-Lang explained.

Inspired by a love of weddings, Senger-Lang said the idea of a historic wedding-themed fashion show was a family affair and will entertain both men and women.

“It’s not just a ladies’ show,” Senger-Lang added. “Who doesn’t want to come and see pretty girls in pretty dresses?”

Senger-Lang’s wedding dress and her husband's suit will also be featured in the show, although neither will be modelling the garments themselves.

“The main purpose is to showcase and celebrate all the weddings through the years. The point is we want to celebrate the experience over the years,” Senger-Lang said.
