Bert Church LIVE Theatre (BCLT) is partnering with a Calgary-based theatre company to bring Airdrie audiences a winter-themed performance about kindness and community on Feb. 26.
The performance, called Snow Angel, takes place in a Canadian town in wintertime and follows the story of a young girl named Angela, who befriends her neighbour. Through an act of kindness, the protagonist impacts the relationships in her community.
“It’s really a story about how kindness and acts of service can have an immediate but also long-lasting positive effect,” said Kirstie Gallant, box office manager at BCLT.
According to Gallant, as part of its 2021-22 season, BCLT has partnered with Quest Theatre – a performance group that specializes in creative and theatrical experiences for audiences.
She added the company focuses on bringing theatre to a younger audience, so they work heavily with schools around Alberta to facilitate “theatre exploration and creativity.”
“We know that by partnering with Quest Theatre, we are going to be getting a performance by experts in their field,” she said.
Gallant added for much of the COVID-19 pandemic, community members have been separated from one another and this show is an effort to bring family, friends, and neighbours together again, with a message of hope.
“The show is focused on the resiliency of the human spirit and also human connection,” she said. “It feels very timely and very necessary, and so I think it’s going to be a really good reminder of how important it is to make positive connections with the people around us.
“Because, for the last two years, we really haven’t seen too many people.”
Gallant said the show is recommended for families with young children ages five and older, but is also an accessible performance for anybody of any demographic.
“Instead of using words and dialogue to tell the story, it’s focused on movement, music, and masks, so it’s really accessible for anybody,” she said.
She added as the show is scheduled to happen the week after the Family Day long weekend, when many kids are off school, it’s a great opportunity for families to come and see the show and spend some quality time together.
“It’s a short show – it runs approximately one hour with no intermission. It’s going to be a really nice little mid-afternoon treat for anybody who comes to watch,” she said.
As per provincial recommendations, the BCLT will no longer be implementing the Restriction Exemption Program (REP), but will still require masks to be worn by all attendees ages 14 and older. Gallant said the theatre also implements their own high touch-point sanitization practices before and after the show.
“We have enacted general admission seating for all our family performances for the rest of the season, so it helps with automatic physical distancing if that is important to the patrons who come,” she said.
