The Shamrock Lanes bowling alley in east Airdrie will play host to the Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Rock and Bowl fundraiser, March 10.

Shamrock Lanes will look fit for a rock concert March 10, when the bowling alley hosts the annual Rock and Bowl For Kids Sake Airdrie fundraiser, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hosted by Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Calgary and Area, the annual bowling tournament raises funds for BBBS programming and the recruitment of mentors in Airdrie. “Bowl for Kids is one of our annual fundraising events in Airdrie, where we ask local businesses and individuals to come together for a fun day of bowling,” said Jason Heer, a mentor and co-ordinator with BBBS. There is no cost to participate, but in order to register, teams of four or five are responsible for raising a minimum of $400. According to Heer, local businesses also sponsor each of the 12 lanes for $300 each. According to BBBS’s website, last year’s rendition raised just shy of $14,000. “All proceeds that come in stay right in Airdrie,” Heer said. While bowlers will be going for strikes, Rock and Bowl will also include a contest for best rock costume. “[Participants] can dress up as much as they want, and we’ll have someone come in and judge them and participate in picking which team has the best outfits,” he said. Heer said Rock and Bowl is a great opportunity for Airdronians to give back to a non-profit organization that provides one-on-one mentorship to local children. He said there are currently more than 20 mentor-child matches in Airdrie, but many more children are currently on the waiting list. “The more opportunities where people can get in and help us bring awareness, and also help us financially, it gives us the opportunity to get out and recruit more mentors for those children that are on the waiting list,” he said. Though the registration deadline of March 4 has passed, Heer said it might still be possible for businesses to sponsor a lane or for a team to enter the tournament. “I imagine if some people came in just prior to the event, we’d most likely, for sure accept their donation and commitment to the event,” he said. There are two separate bowling sessions, with the first starting at 10 a.m. and the second starting at noon.
