Mindful colouring coming to Crossfield this fall

According to the Cleveland Clinic, adult colouring is a low-stakes activity, making it a calming way to unwind and de-stress from the day’s affairs.

Four mindful colouring events will be hosted at the Crossfield Library on varying days throughout the fall.

Three upcoming events will allow Crossfield residents to colour their stress away.

Mindful colouring sessions will be hosted at the Crossfield Municipal Library on Sept. 21, Oct. 19, and Nov. 16 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The monthly events are free to attend and all supplies will be provided, including mandala colouring sheets and coloured pencils for adults, as well as crayons and colouring pages for younger children.

“What we’re planning to do with this is to kind of help more with healthy strategies to manage stress, to help make people feel better about themselves, and also to help them feel closer to people in their community,” said Nicole Vandenberghe, the family and community support services (FCSS) and community development coordinator for the Town of Crossfield.

The idea stemmed from a need to offer Crossfield residents a place to come together to de-stress, according to Vandenberghe, who added the timing of the events is perfect.

“Life gets a little more hectic after summer as we start to get back into our everyday routine, so having an outlet for people to go and have a spot where they can take a moment to breathe and relax and de-stress a little might be beneficial to the community,” she said.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, adult colouring is a low-stakes activity, making it a calming way to unwind and de-stress from the day’s affairs.

While focusing on colouring, the brain is able to relax and attention is removed from the things causing stress.

“The scientific methods around colouring mandalas is that it promotes relaxation, it calms the nervous system, it invokes positive energy and it kind of balances your body’s energy as well,” Vandenberghe said.

As another benefit, Vandenberghe is hoping to connect people in the community by providing a space where residents can meet others who call Crossfield home.

“We figured we would set up a time for people to come relax and colour mandalas with us and work more towards having those healthy strategies for coping with stress,” Vandenberghe said.

Although a library card is not needed to colour at the library, Crossfield residents can obtain one for free while they are there.

Vandenberghe noted the library is completely accessible to people of all mobilities, with handicap parking spaces located in the back of the library parking lot. A lift is available to bring guests upstairs, and differentially abled individuals wanting to join the colouring events are encouraged to join.

Although there are currently only four scheduled colouring events, Vandenberghe said she would consider adding more dates next year if the event is popular.
