Rocky View County (RVC) council approved over $200,000 in recreational grants for the hamlet of Langdon during its Feb. 1 Recreation Governance Committee meeting.

Council approved a $3,000 allocation from the Langdon Special Tax Funding Grant to Langdon Theatre Association to pay for advertising, an annual field trip, and venue rental. It also approved $30,121 to the Langdon Community Association for portable toilets, hockey nets, playground maintenance, insurance, annual website costs, its Dolly Parton Imagination Library program, and for booking software for the hamlet’s future library.

Another $12,900 was granted to the Synergy Youth and Community Development Society for three white boards, three laptops, bulletin boards, a projector with ceiling mount and screen, two TVs with wall mounts and Yodeck subscriptions, and facility rental space within the Qualico Resource Centre. The Committee also approved an additional $17,746 from the Langdon Special Tax Funding Grant to upgrade the outdoor security system at the multi-use court and the Qualico Resource Centre.

The big-ticket item from the Recreation Governance Committee for Langdon during the Feb. 1 meeting came in the form of a reallocation of funds that were originally reserved for the Langdon Off Leash Dog Park and Hanson Park dog park projects to the Iron Horse Fields Irrigation Project to help keep the grass a little greener at the ball diamonds there. The amount reallocated for this purpose was $145,000.

The proposed Langdon dog park site was no longer considered a suitable location after community members rejected it. Administration had initially proposed a new location for the off-leash park in the Hanson community.

Council had supported that location and approved additional funding through the Langdon Special Tax program in the County’s capital plan.

However, County staff reported, the Hanson Dog Park project had not been able to move forward, and recommended the $145,000 in funding provided for it would be better spent at the Iron Horse Fields baseball diamonds at this time.

Committee members approved all the Langdon recreational grant motions unanimously.
