Former Crossfield councillor Norma Lang has defeated Ward 1 incumbent Jen Avery in the Rocky View Schools (RVS) trustee election.

Lang tallied 769 votes while Avery managed 610.

Two other candidates, Shauna Traub and Jo Lambert, received 248 and 254 votes.

“I’m just chomping at the bit to get started,” said Lang. “I’m so excited.”

The new trustee will represent Balzac, Crossfield, Beiseker, Irricana, Kathyrn and rural Airdrie.

“I was quite hopeful that Crossfield residents would show up in droves,” said Lang. “I knew that was going to be my angle if I was going to win.”

“Luckily (Crossfield) residents here didn’t disappoint. I think that’s what the deciding factor was.”

Lang said her previous experience in Drumheller’s Golden Hills School Division as a Community Building Coordinator will help ease the learning curve as RVS’ newest trustee.

The total votes cast for Ward 1 was 1,881, according to RVS.

Jen Avery was unavailable for comment.
