Nose Creek Elementary School received a $1,000 gift from Shell Canada for its Home Reading Program, Oct.15.
The money was presented by Shell representative Marc Gagnon to school principal John Murphy and about 200 new books will be purchased for the program.
“Books are expensive,” said Trenna Allain, spokesperson at Nose Creek Elementary. “Any time we get funds for that program it’s a big deal.”
The Home Reading Program began when the school opened and encourages students to read for 15 minutes each night with their parents.
The books are lent out to students and deteriorate over time, a chief reason the literature needs to be continually replaced.
“You are constantly having to replenish books, they get broken and lost,” she said. “With our increase in school size, it’s a constant battle to keep up.”
