An investigation is being conducted into a death that occurred while the deceased was in the custody of Airdrie RCMP.

At approximately 8 p.m. May 24, a 50-year-old male was arrested and taken into custody at CrossIron Mills mall, according to a press release issued May 25 by Airdrie RCMP. While in custody, the release stated, the male died of causes "that have yet to be determined."

The next of kin for the deceased have been notified, RCMP added.

Initially, RCMP said the Alberta Serious Response Team (ASIRT) was investigating, with the assistance of the RCMP Edmonton Major Crimes Unit. However, a correction was issued May 26 stating, “ASIRT is not investigating the incident. RCMP Edmonton Major Crimes has carriage of the investigation.”

“We apologize for the error,” said the RCMP press release.

According to the RCMP, no additional details are available at this time.

*Note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the arrest occurred April 24 – this should have read May 24. The story has now been updated. We regret this error.
