School board asks for time to stop student speeding

Beiseker council addressed a series of complaints regarding students speeding away from the Beiseker Community School (BCS), using the alley behind the 300 block of 5th Street.

Council had been planning on closing the exit that is being used for this route, but the Rocky View Schools board has asked for time to correct on the problem first.

Val Murdoff, BCS principal, Darrell Couture, associate superintendent and Ron Mesiatowsky, superintendent of maintenance attended the meeting and advised council that the parking lot configuration was approved in 1998.

The school has not been aware of any problems concerning the parking lot and believes that closing that exit, thereby forcing the vehicles to exit onto the street, could cause more problems with school buses and children.

Murdoff advised that the school only became aware of the problem when council sent a letter requesting that the exit to the alley be closed.

She has since talked to the students and the school is monitoring the lot more closely.

She requested that council give the school more time to rectify the problem.

Council was open to this idea and advised that it would contact Murdoff if any more complaints are received.

• Eight new Green Ash trees have been planted at the corner of Highway 72 and Beacon Heights Road.

• Wiring has been put in place for the new community events sign with delivery expected in three to four weeks.

• The Village backhoe needs new lower ball joints and the front differential needs to be replaced. Cost would be about $6,800. As the backhoe is not worth that much, Councillor Fegan moved to have Hnybida research the costs to purchase or lease a backhoe, and bring the information back to council.

The next meeting of Beiseker council, an organizational meeting for the newly elected council, will be held on Oct. 26. The public is welcome.
