Two weeks after winning its second Canadian U18 national championship in two years, the curling team skipped by Carstairs’ Myla Plett and coached by Airdrie's Blair Lenton has won the U18 silver medal at the Canada Winter Games.

The team is comprised of Plett, third Alyssa Nedohin, second Chloe Fediuk and lead Allie Iskiw. David Nedohin coaches alongside Lenton.

En-route to the gold medal game on Feb. 24, the squad beat teams from Yukon 9-2, Manitoba 6-4, P.E.I. 6-5, lost to Nova Scotia 4-7, and defeated New Brunswick 7-4 in the round robin.

In the quarter-finals, they beat Ontario 6-3, then followed up by downing Quebec 7-3 in the semi-final before falling 9-5 to Nova Scotia in the final.

“Canada Winter Games was such an amazing experience,” Plett told Great West Media. “Having an opportunity to be part of Team Alberta and hang out with athletes from all over the country is something I will never forget. It was such fun.”

The Carstairs-area resident and senior at Olds Koinonia Christian School said her team really came together as the Games progressed.

“We pulled out a couple close games in the round robin but then we started to play really well in the playoffs,” she said.

“Nova Scotia was amazing in the final. It wasn’t my best game unfortunately, but that’s sports. I am super proud of our silver medal and all we have accomplished this year.

“P.E.I. was amazing. I had never been there before and I definitely loved it.”

The team will now be taking a week off after some very busy recent weeks, according to Plett. After the brief pause, they'll begin to train for the U20 nationals, which take place at the end of March in Rouny-Noranda.

“We are really looking forward to seeing how we can do in the higher age category at the national level and it looks like the venue in Quebec will be great so I’m really excited about that,” Plett said.
