Canadians win two during weekend play

The senior men’s Beiseker Canadians baseball team is hoping to return to championship form this season.

The senior men’s Beiseker Canadians baseball team is hoping to return to championship form this season.

The team is 3W-2L in the Parkland Baseball League season thus far after posting a pair of victories last weekend, an 11-4 win over the Red Deer Razorbacks, May 30 and a 5-4 victory over Innisfail, May 28.

Allan Metzger, the Canadians’ third baseman, said he’s looking forward to the rest of the season as this year’s team is starting to come together.

“It should be competitive again this year,” said Metzger, a member since the team’s inception in 1997. “I think it’s gotten a little bit better and more competitive over the years.”

Cam Culp had a strong pitching performance in the Red Deer win, while Wade Olsen hit a two-RBI double to put the Canadians in a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. That win put the team above .500 for the first time in the young season, after it dropped two games to Lacombe and beat Carstairs.

The regular season includes 17 games, followed by a playoff tournament in August.

The Beiseker Canadians, which has players ranging in age from 20 to 40, has played in various leagues since its formation, the most recent being the Parkland Baseball League, which is based around the Red Deer area.

The league has North and South Divisions, with Beiseker competing in the South along with Innisfail, Carstairs and Olds. Rocky Mountain House, Eckville, Lacombe and Red Deer comprise the north.

The Canadians’ next home game is on June 2 against Olds. The team will also host a tournament June 12-14 to compliment Beiseker Sports Day.
