Mustangs senior girls qualify for provincials

The Mustangs qualified as the zone's wild card entry for provincials thanks to a narrow two-point victory over the Cochrane Cobras last Friday, after earlier wins over Bow Valley High School and Brooks Composite High School.

The George McDougall Mustangs senior girls' basketball team qualified for the ASAA 3A provincials this weekend, courtesy of their second-place finish at the South Central Zones tournament on March 10.

The Mustangs qualified as the zone's wild card entry for provincials thanks to a narrow two-point victory over the Cochrane Cobras last Friday, after earlier wins over Bow Valley High School and Brooks Composite High School.

The Mustangs will join the Strathmore Spartans as the South Central Zone's two 3A teams at the upcoming provincial tournament, which runs in Wetaskiwin from March 16 to 18.

In the 4A senior girls' division, the high-flying W.H. Croxford Cavaliers, who had topped the Rocky View Sports Association this season, also finished with a silver medal at their zones competition.

However, the Cavaliers will not play at provincials, as only one 4A team from the South Central Zone qualified. The Cavaliers lost to the Foothills Composite Falcons of Okotoks in the South Central Zones gold-medal game.

The Cavaliers senior boys' team finished in fourth place of their 4A zones tournament, after a 93-76 defeat to the Chestermere Lakers in the bronze-medal game.
