Dear editor, I want to applaud the Airdrie Public Library for hosting a week of reading books that are banned for content that someone decided we should not be reading.

Re: "Library to host 'banned books' reading marathon next week," Airdrie City View, article, Feb. 16, 2023

Dear editor,

I want to applaud the Airdrie Public Library for hosting a week of reading books that are banned for content that someone decided we should not be reading.

Adolf Hitler and did the same thing in Germany (banned books) when the Nazi party held the famous book-burning in March 1933. Over 100,000 soldiers in Canada gave their lives in two wars for freedoms that we should be protecting, such as making our own choices on what to read. Of course, there will always be books that are disturbing or offensive to some. To them, I say “don’t read them.”

However if someone wants to read these books, no one should have the right to tell them that they cannot.

It’s distressing to see our educators/administrators cancel speakers or events because a few people don’t agree with the topics they preach. So I say thank you to Airdrie's library for hosting such a wonderful initiative.
