Motorcyclist dies in Cochrane

A collision in Cochrane July 15 resulted in the death of a motorcyclist.

According to Cst. Kary Moore, media relations officer with Cochrane RCMP, the incident occurred at 2:45 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 22 and James Walker Trail, in the south end of the town.

“The motorcycle was travelling southbound on Highway 22 and the car was travelling northbound,” she said. “The collision occurred…when the car turned west in front of the motorcycle.”

The motorcyclist, a 64-year-old man, was transported by ambulance to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to RCMP. The driver of the car, a 78-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries.

According to Moore, the cause of the collision remains under investigation. She said the incident is a reminder for both motorists and motorcyclists to be wary of one another on the roads at this time of year, and to exercise caution.

According to media reports and navbug.com – a website that tracks highway traffic reports – this was Alberta’s eighth fatal collision involving a motorcyclist this year, and the second in July. Also on July 15, a 56-year-old man from Ponoka died of injuries sustained during a collision five days earlier in central Alberta.

June was a particularly deadly month in Alberta for motorcyclists – three fatal motorcycle vehicle collisions occurred.

“It is motorcycle as well as bicycle season, so it’s important [for drivers] to be aware you’re sharing the road with motorcycles and bicycles,” Moore said. “They’re obviously smaller and less visible.

“As well, [it’s important] for motorcycle riders to make sure they’re properly equipped and their bike is in good working order, and the rider is wearing a helmet and proper gear, in the event of a collision.”
