Royal Canadian International Circus returns to CrossIron Mills

“It’s all about the traditional circus with world-class acts that provide families with a unique opportunity to show their children something new and exciting in a safe environment.”

From high-flying balancing acts to death-defying stunts, the Royal Canadian International Circus has it all.

Beaming in bright colours of yellow and red, the large circus tent brings in audiences by the hundreds to showcase the performers' talents in a fun and exciting environment.

Coming to CrossIron Mills mall in Balzac, the circus will be putting on 17 shows for Rocky View County and area residents looking for a new and different kind of entertainment this spring. The circus will be based at the mall from May 26 to June 24, with multiple showtimes so people have the chance to see the acts in person.

A media press release from the Royal Canadian International Circus highlighted Joseph Bauer, who is the Circus Ringmaster and a “ninth-generation daredevil and circus veteran with over four decades of experience.”

“So far the show has received rave reviews as we showcase our brand-new spectacular show in the ring,” Bauer said in the press release. “It’s all about the traditional circus with world-class acts that provide families with a unique opportunity to show their children something new and exciting in a safe environment.”

Those who perform with the Royal Canadian International Circus come from all over the world, according to the director of public relations for the circus, Catherine Sproule. With their families having close ties to the circus life, some of the performers’ experience can be traced back 10 generations.

One of the acts that attendees will witness at CrossIron Mills includes the African Bone Breakers Contortionists, who have previously competed on the popular TV show, America’s Got Talent. The group was able to make it all the way to the quarterfinals before being eliminated from the TV competition.

According to the media press release, additional entertainment will include award-winning Peruvian juggler Nilson Escobar, a high wire troupe, and the Globe of Death, which includes motorcyclists “zooming around in a Steel Cage at 80 kilometres per hour.”

But that’s not all that will be on display, and Bauer said those wishing to see the show will be in for a thrill as they experience everything else the circus has to offer.

Sproule said hosting the circus at CrossIron Mills has become a tradition, as they have been setting up the event there for roughly five years. She noted the shopping centre is a great venue due to its accessibility and large space that their big top tent can be set up on.

Partnering with the mall has been wonderful over the years, Sproule said.

“We’ve had nothing but a wonderful relationship as we stage our Royal Canadian Circus and bring thousands of fans every year,” she said.

According to their website, the show lasts approximately two hours and 30 minutes, including an intermission. The doors open 30 minutes prior to the start of the show.
